The iPad might only be six months old, but already rumours of new models are starting to ramp up. Word coming out of Taiwan today suggests Apple is working on two smaller, iPad mini-style devices, one rocking a 5.6-inch panel, the other clocking in at 7-inches.

Digitimes says component-maker Compal Electronics may have won the order to make the new iPads, which will include a specced up version of the current model. Sources also reckon Apple has recently placed orders with plans for the new gadgets to land in late 2010, or early 2011.

This would be a bold move from Apple so soon after the iPad’s successful launch. While a new iPad for 2011 is likely, an upgrade this year would surely anger current iPad owners.
